School and Community
Magothy is one of 19 middle schools in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The school is located in Arnold, which is part of what is known as the Broadneck peninsula.  The school is situated off College Parkway, across the road from Anne Arundel Community College. Our students come from suburban residential neighborhoods and all students are bused to the school. Magothy students come from 2 elementary feeder schools, Cape St. Claire and Broadneck.  Students leaving Magothy will enter Broadneck High School.


Facility

Magothy was built in 1974, as an open space school. Over the years the facility has been modified and renovated to enclose classrooms, where possible, and provide instructional space to accommodate special programs and 3 computer labs. The state rated capacity of the building is 1053 students.

Staff
Magothy has 3 administrators, 2 counselors, 52 full or part-time teachers, a Technology Support Technician, a part-time school nurse, 1 full time health assistant, 1 media specialist, 1 media aide, an Alternative to Suspension supervisor, 6 special education assistants and 6 secretaries. A pupil personnel worker and school psychologists are assigned to the school one and a half days each week. All teachers have coursework beyond their college degrees and the majority has Master’s Degrees or Master’s Equivalent Certificates.

Course Offerings
Magothy offers all Anne Arundel County approved course offerings for middle school students. Students are scheduled into 4 classes and lunch each day. All students take Language Arts  with 6th and 7th grade students assigned a double period of language arts classes. All students are assigned Science, Social Studies, and Math 1 period every day all year. Students may also choose from the following Encore classes which meet every other day all year; Art, Family and Consumer Science, Technology Education, Band, Chorus, Strings, General music, Physical Education and Foreign Language. French and Spanish are offered to 7th and 8th graders. Algebra I and Geometry are offered to eligible 8th grade students. Special education assistance is available to qualifying students.

School Organization
Each grade level is divided into Interdisciplinary Teams (IDTs.) Teams are make up of the student’s 4 academic teachers. The Team is responsible for the educational progress of the approximately 120-150 students they teach. The Team plans the student’s instructional day, develops interdisciplinary activities, conferences with parents, delivers advisory support, and coordinate tests and field trips. Service Learning activities are also completed within IDTs.


Instructional Levels
Students are assigned to instructional levels based on the recommendation of their teachers and the approval of their parents. Magothy has above average, average and low average classes. Magothy teachers continually assess students and make adjustments to instructional levels, with parental consultation.

Extracurricular Activities
Magothy offers Intramural sports and clubs as an after school program on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Computer club, Newspaper Club, Yearbook club, Drama club, Photography Club, SADD club, Art club, French club, Media club, Nature club and musical groups such as Chorus, Orchestra, Concert band and Stage Band are offered. Intramural sports include flag football, basketball, ping-pong, Lacrosse, and softball. Magothy also has a strong and active Student Government Association. All students are encouraged to participate in the extracurricular program. Additional information is available in the Clubs and Activities section.

Guidance and Counseling
Guidance services are available to all students at Magothy River Middle School.The counselors at Magothy are committed to providing quality service for students, parents, teachers, and staff.
  The counselors at Magothy River work with students, teachers, staff, and parents to help with their concerns and needs. Magothy River Guidance and Counseling Center provides assistance in four main areas: Individual and Group Counseling, Academic and Career Counseling, Peer Mediation, and Parental and Staff Support. Services provided in each area include:
